Introduction

This project was an investigation into outcomes of practice-related remediation programs offered by Boards of Nursing.

Remediation is the process of evaluating, counseling, and educating a healthcare professional to improve performance or practice. Different states have different types of remediation programs for licensed nurses who have been reported to the Board of Nursing for practice-related issues.

This study was designed to investigate if remediation program A had a lower rate of recidivism and licensure lapse versus

program B.

Introduction

01. Research Design

Retrospective/archival longitudinal study design
  • A comprehensive literature review on remediation in nursing and medicine was conducted
  • A day-long stakeholder and subject matter expert interviewing session was conducted
  • Data was obtained from a database that tracked information on nurse licensure

  • Additional data was obtained from Boards of Nursing where the remediation programs were implemented

  • Data from 2007 to 2015 was retrieved

  • Data were compared between remediation programs A and B

  • 653 nurses took program A

  • 715 nurses took program B

  • Relationship between remediation program (A vs B) and recidivism (yes vs no)
  • Relationship between remediation program (A vs B) and licensure lapse (yes vs no)
Analytics: Survival Analysis
  • Time to recidivism for program A vs B
  • Time until licensure lapse for program A vs B
  • A log rank test was used to test for differences in the survival curves between the two independent groups

Insights
This study was the first step in investigating the effectiveness of practice-related remediation programs for licensed nurses. One finding from the study indicated that State A had a higher licensure lapse as compared to State B. One explanation for this may be public versus non-public discipline. Discipline in State A was public and the nurses may have needed to move out-of-state to get a job. State B nurses may not have had this trouble since the remediation program allowed for non-public discipline—making it easier for them to remain a nurse in that state.
